La Academia de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas ha invitado a unirse a la organización a 176 artistas y ejecutivos que han destacado por sus contribuciones al cine. Aquellos que acepten la invitación serán las únicas adiciones en 2012 al plantel de miembros de la Academia. La organización se ha mantenido estable con poco menos de 6.000 miembros votantes desde 2003.

Quinn y Steve Weinstein como miembros asociados. Los miembros asociados no están representados en el Consejo y no tienen privilegios de voto en los premios de la Academia.
Tres personas (señaladas con un asterisco) han sido invitadas a unirse a la Academia en múltiples ramas. Estos individuos deben seleccionar una rama al aceptar la invitación.
Los nuevos miembros serán recibidos en la Academia en una recepción por invitación en septiembre.
Junta de Gobernadores de la Academia también aprobó una recomendación para la Rama de Directores de Arte, avanzando, la rama se conocerá como la Rama de Diseñadores. La rama incluye diseñadores de producción, directores de arte, decoradores de set y diseñadores de vestuario.
Las nominaciones para los 85th Academy Awards se anunciarán el Martes, 15 de Enero de 2013, y la retransmisión de la Ceremonia de entrega de Premios será el Domingo, 24 de Febrero de 2013 en el Hollywood & Highland Center® en Hollywood, y será televisada, por la cadena de televisión ABC a más de 225 países.
